Audible Chroma - behind the scenes

Exhibition walk through

We recently discovered home video footage of an exhibition walk through. The resolution is low, and the focus is soft, but it’s the only video record we have. The gallery track during the exhibition was a compilation of two minute excerpts of each colour composition with a spoken introduction of each colour. The gallery track can be listened to with spoken introductions on Tim’s Bandcamp page.

NOTE:  We are encountering difficulties with the archived  video footage on this page and will resolve it as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding.

Painting Audible Chroma - AC#4orange

And below, some behind the scenes home video footage of Painting Audible Chroma - AC#4orange. This painting was about the colour, its energy and movement as I experienced it. The preparation was the longer part of making the artwork, as I thought it through for weeks, thinking through the process in my mind; then mixing the colours, adjusting the viscosity, transparency, surface tension, and drying time; and then the painting needed to be done in one go as I immersed myself into the physicality of it. The process resembles a dance as my body becomes part of the whole gestural expression of the colour. The movement is to and from the canvas, observing and coming closer, stretching, sweeping, directing the brushmarks, as the layers of paint flicker over one another. And in case you were wondering, while I was focused on painting I was unaware of the shadows moving across the canvas. The music accompanying the video is Audible Chroma - Orange, by Tim Roberts and is available to purchase on Tim’s Bandcamp page as CD or digital album. Video plays for just over 4 minutes.

Audible Chroma - behind the scenes

Candid photos of us working in the studio. And yes, I am painting in barefeet, whoops; and standing on a chair, whoops again, bad example of health & safety but shows what happens as I get immersed in a painting process and forget everything else. At least I’m wearing covered shoes to stretch canvas, and a glove with the cobalt violet oil paint. The exhibition was mostly painted in a single garage with a foray into the back yard, and some canvas stretching on the table tennis table on the verandah; Tim’s music setup was also in the aforementioned garage and it was a fantastic collaborative time together.

As I mentioned in my speech at the opening, until the exhibition was installed in the gallery, we had not seen all of the paintings together at the one time. Video is 31 seconds.
