Sharon Roberts - visual artist

Sharon Roberts is a contemporary painter residing and working in Queensland, Australia.  Known for her lyrical multi-layered artworks and nuanced colour , Sharon expresses  a contemplative response to place and time.  Working primarily in paint, her exploration of an idea frequently expands into varied creative responses which include poetry, photography and physical expression.

The gesture, space and rhythm of landscape – its essence; its sense of place – is of more interest to her than the depiction of a scene, and a deeper underlying belief that reality is more than purely physical matter underpins and informs her practice.

The places of Sharon's artwork are often metaphors for a spiritual journey. Emotive and spiritual connections are expressed through colour, gesture, space and the physicality of materials and process. This includes her choices of pigments, binders and supports, extending into making her own paints for some artworks.

En plein air sketch-books record her story through place and time and, although some sketches may re-emerge in the studio as landscapes with varying degrees of abstraction, their significance lies in the artist's personal connection to place.

“Across my body of work, the viewer may experience my passion for pigment and paint, colour relationships, gesture, space and emotional connection. There is a minimising of detail, as I seek to express the quality or idea which inspired the artwork.”
